Description
Stamp issued on 26 June 1991 to mark Slovenia’s declaration of independence from Yugoslavia the previous day, and the country’s first issue as an independent nation.
The release was technically illegal, as Slovenia’s independence had not been recognised at that point, and the country was not yet a member of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). However, the issue is properly recognised in Stanley Gibbons’ catalogue as SG 134, and hence as the first Slovenia issue since the German Nazi occupation “Provinz Laibach” issues of 1945.
The stamp depicts architect Jože Plečnik’s unrealised design from 1947 for a new Slovene parliament, known as the “Cathedral of Freedom”. Though never built, the design is considered a national symbol, and also features on the Slovene 10 euro cent coin.
U/M / Unmounted Mint / MNH / Mint Never Hinged.
