About Hutt River

The Principality of Hutt River - originally founded as Hutt River Province - was an unrecognised micronation in Western Australia, which "seceded" in 1970 amidst a dispute over wheat production quotas.

Led by the self-styled "His Majesty Prince Leonard I of Hutt", the 75 sq km province was never recognised by Australia or any other country, but was a popular tourist attraction for almost half a century. Among the souvenirs that visitors could buy were Hutt River's own Cinderella postage stamps, with more than 70 issues produced between 1973 and 2019.

By then aged 91, Leonard I abdicated in favour of his youngest son, Prince Graeme, in 2017, and passed away in 2019.

In August 2020 - facing the challenges of an Australian tax bill, and no tourists due to Covid-19 - the province was dissolved.
