About UK Scout posts

The history of UK Scout posts goes back to 1981, when Scout groups and other charities were for the first time allowed to collect and distribute greetings cards for a specified period before Christmas, typically selling their own postage stamps, and providing dedicated post boxes, via local retailers.

The Postal Services Act 2000, which remains in force, confirmed that “the collection, conveyance and delivery of Christmas cards by a charity, provided that the activity concerned takes place during the period starting with 25th November in any year and ending with 1st January in the following year”, was still permitted.

Today, many Scout groups – including on Wirral, which has operated since 1982 – are continuing to run annual postal services nearly 40 years after they were first launched.
