About Sheffield Scout Post

Sheffield Scout Post was one of Britain’s most well-known charity Christmas card delivery schemes, operating every year between 1981 and 2000 until a shortage of volunteers willing to deliver the all the mail forced it to close.

Sheffield’s Scouts issued their own attractive stamps throughout the years of operation, initially under the name ‘Woodseats Venture Unit’ and then, from 1990, ‘Sheffield Scout Post’ as more local groups got involved.

The history of Scout posts anywhere in the UK goes back to 1981, when Scout groups and other charities were for the first time allowed to collect and distribute greetings cards for a specified period before Christmas, typically selling their own postage stamps, and providing dedicated post boxes, via local retailers.

The Postal Services Act 2000, which remains in force, confirmed that “the collection, conveyance and delivery of Christmas cards by a charity, provided that the activity concerned takes place during the period starting with 25th November in any year and ending with 1st January in the following year”, was still permitted. Today, many Scout groups are continuing to run annual postal services nearly 40 years after they were first launched.
