About Carn Iar
Carn Iar is an uninhabited island that forms part of the Summer Isles in Scotland.
The Summer Isles themselves have a long history of issuing their own local carriage labels (some of which we have in the shop here) to transport mail to the mainland at Achiltibuie, most recently in 2016.
However, this 1961 issue is the only one ever produced by Carn Iar, and, while very attractive and collectable, is not believed to have served any postal function.
The exact date of issue is not known, and sources variously cite a year of issue of 1961 or 1962. However, the official Summer Isles Post Office catalogue from 1997, Stamps of the Summer Isles, records the year as 1961, so we assume that to be correct.
