Description
Orkney £1 stamp, issued on 8 August 2024, depicting the 170-foot high sea stack North Gaulton Castle, just south of Yesnaby on the west coast of Orkney’s Mainland.
North Gaulton Castle famously featured in a 1994 TV advertisement for the Rover 214 SEi range, with striking aerial footage of a car parked on top of the sea stack.
The stamp was intended to show the Old Man of Hoy – a different and even taller sea stack, off Orkney’s Hoy island – and is inscribed as such. However, the image error was only noticed once the issue had already been printed.
U/M / Unmounted Mint / MNH / Mint Never Hinged.
About Orkney
In addition to his Welsh Cinderella issues for Anglesey and Llanddwyn, Martin Husband of Anglesey Stamps also produces occasional issues for various Scottish islands, including Orkney, an archipelago off the north coast of Scotland.
Martin's first Orkney issue appeared in 2018, with seven further issues released since.
As with any of Martin's issues, the stamps have no local postal function of any kind given that Orkney is well served by Royal Mail, but they are attractive and well-produced Cinderellas that give a flavour of the islands' heritage and landscape.
