Description

— New stock added —

Selection of six different labels celebrating past FA Cup winners, from Gairsay, Gugh Island, St Martin, Bernera and Easdale.

They are thought to have been produced in the 1990s, and all bear the names of islands off the coast of Britain – none, however, performed any genuine local postal function.

Each selection includes the top four stamps shown in the image above, plus two others that vary from lot to lot – one from Easdale, and one other that could be from Gairsay, Gugh Island, St Martin or Bernera!

U/M / Unmounted Mint / MNH / Mint Never Hinged.

About these stamps

All these fantasy stamps are believed to be the work of Clive Feigenbaum, who had previously created controversial issues in the 1970s and 1980s for Staffa, Eynhallow and elsewhere. All the stamps have identical dimensions, and are designed in a similar style, which suggests that they have a common origin.

Part of Easdale island, located in Scotland’s Firth of Lorn about 15 miles south of Oban, was owned by Feigenbaum, with the first Easdale stamps appearing in 1988, and further issues through until 2009.

Gairsay is an island on Orkney, for which labels appeared between 1979 and 2000, while labels inscribed “St Martin” are believed to relate to the island of St Martin‘s, in the Isles of Scilly.

Gugh Island, in the Isles of Scilly, is a place known for issuing its own stamps previously, between 1972 and 1981, authorised by the island’s owner. New issues with no apparent connection to the island, such as these FA Cup labels, started to appear in 1995.

More than 2,000 (!) stamps inscribed “Bernera Islands” were issued between 1977 and 2000. The name refers to Great Bernera – a Scottish island of around eight square miles, linked to Lewis by a road bridge – and the much smaller 341-acre Little Bernera.
