Description

Canvey Island Local Post 50p stamp, issued on 6 January 2025 to commemorate the “pub rock” band Dr. Feelgood, who were formed on the island.

The group had a 1978 top ten single with the track “Milk and Alcohol”, and continue to tour widely today, albeit with members who joined the band from the 1980s onwards. Dr. Feelgood are also known for their debut single release from 1974, “Roxette”, which inspired the name of the successful Swedish pop duo.

Limited to a print run of just 140 copies, the stamp depicts a mural of the band’s original line-up that was painted by artist Liam Heatherson at the island’s Concord Beach in 2015.

This release is intended to be the first in a series of stamp issues that will showcase musical acts with a Canvey Island connection.

U/M / Unmounted Mint / MNH / Mint Never Hinged.

About Canvey Island

Canvey Island itself is both an island and a town that can be found in the Thames Estuary, near Southend, with road bridges crossing the creeks that separate it from the rest of Essex.

Canvey Island Local Post (CILP), meanwhile, badges itself as a “private non-commercial local post”, dedicated “to the promotion of Cinderella stamps, postcard collecting, modern local posts (philopoly) and the history and development of Canvey Island”, and has operated since 2010.

Most recently, new issues have been released throughout 2023 and beyond after CILP took a production break for over a year.

The well-maintained website at canveypost.org features regular news updates and a full catalogue of past issues up to 2021.
